Where & How To Convert Currency ... |
|
|
|
|
|
So how can you change your currency, and where? Well here we offer some suggestions and tips when converting your foreign currency, whether that's at home or abroad.
It's worth noting that all the major currencies will only move plus or minus 1% in any given day so it doesn't have a huge impact on your holiday spending money. What is more important to consider is the rates you'll be charged to change your money and to change it back if you haven't spent it all. |

| Exchanging At Home |
| |
You can convert your pounds to your required local currency in most banks and travel agents, although many Experts suggest that you should only change enough to cover immediate travel costs as exchanging your money in the UK can be prohibitive.
As well as banks, travel agents and even the Post Office other services include online money exchange services that take American dollars and convert them into the exchange you need, sending it to your home. |

| Hotel or Airport Exchange Facilities |
| |
| Airport and hotel exchange facilities are convenient but because of this can charge very high rates so beware! It will save you money to be prepared and exchange your currency in advance of travel. |
| |
| Credit Cards |
| |
Many credit cards are able to exchange foreign currency for you, and often give good rates of exchange so it's worth contacting your card provider for their current rates.
If you do decide to exchange via your credit card be aware that if your home currency rate is falling and your transactions is not converted instantly there's a chance you'll end up with a conversion rate different to what you expected - possibly worse.
Traveller's Checks are popular for travellers as they can be exchanged in local hotels, banks but they offer the added benefit that if they are lost or stolen they can be easily replaced so you aren't out of pocket. |
| |
| Local Banks |
| |
Local banks normally offer good rates of exchange but bear in mind that a couple of things can happen...
The exchange rate is set by supply and demand so if unpopular you might not make any saving from that offered in the UK.
Or the government of the Country sets the currency rate. |
| |
| Cash Machines - ATMs |
| |
To save carrying large sums of money around cash machines/ATMs are a handy and convenient way to get local currency as and when you need it, plus normally at a reasonable exchange rate.
However, you will be charged a withdrawal fee each time you take cash out that all adds up, especially if withdrawing money in smaller denominations.
Do advise your bank before travel if you intend to use this method of getting foreign currency, otherwise your bank may suspect card fraud and freeze your card if strange transactions appear. |
