Prepare Your Mobile Before You Go... |
| Here are some things you should do / consider when taking your mobile phones abroad. |
| |
- Ask your Network provider to set your phone up for 'international roaming' - it takes up to 14 days so do this well in advance of travel.
Not all handsets work in all countries - in America you'll need a tri-band handset for example - check your mobile will actually work in the country you are travelling to.
- How much will you be charged to make calls from abroad? Check as it can be very expensive - also re-confirm these just before you travel as all quotes are subject to change.
- See if there are any deals being offered by your Network provider for travelling abroad with your mobile. It maybe you can swap tariffs.
- Check with your Network provider what the cheapest options are for using your mobile phone on holiday, in the country you are travelling to.

Using Your Mobile Often When Abroad ... |
| |
| |
| It may be that your Network provider will offer 'international roaming' calls from abroad for a cheaper monthly fee. Check with your provider to see if they do, if you can change onto this tariff and how long for. |
| |
| |
Sometimes, if you are not offered a special deal by your Network provider, it is cheaper to use an alternative SIM card in your phone (the SIM card is the small card slotted into the back of your phone that allows you to make and receive calls).
International airports and selected UK retailers do sell separate SIM cards that you can use on foreign networks - do check to see if there is an expiry date on your newly purchased SIM card. |

You're travelling with your mobile and you've arrived. Switch your phone on as normal. You will be diverted to a local phone transmitter (pre-arranged by your Network provider) which will route your calls.
Even though you are abroad, you have notified your Network provider you will be using your mobile abroad, your phone will still think it is in the UK. What this means is that if you are holidaying in France, for example, and you call a British friend who is also holidaying in France it's routed via the UK!
That's a massive 1,800 mile round trip just for a distance of a couple of hundred yards between calls! And your friend receiving your call will also be changed for the call.
This is why using your mobile on holiday can cost a lot of money and why we suggest you ask your Network provider about using your mobile abroad well in advance of your travel. |

Security Measures When Travelling With Your Mobile ... |
| |
| |
Sometimes the worst can and will happen. Make sure that if your mobile phone is lost or stolen you can make every effort to cancel the phone and your tariff . Firstly, check with your Network provider before you leave what information they will need in order to cancel your mobile, some for example require a password. Make a note of your mobile's serial number (known as the IMEI number) along with your mobile telephone number (how many of us really know it!) and the telephone number of your Network provider's customer services dept., including UK dialling code, see numbers above.
If your phone is stolen you will be able to contact your Network provider in the UK and request that they block your phone and/or SIM card straight away.

| |
Remember - not all travel insurance policies have automatic cover for lost or stolen mobile phones so if you want cover do check that you have the right policy.
