A Roman burial site in AD 100-200, London Stansted Airport began life as a USAAF runway in 1942.

1944, D-Day: Bombers from Stansted led more than 600 aircraft from Stansted over the beaches of France.

Twenty two years later in 1966, BAA took control of Stansted and in 1970, the new terminal was extended to cope with the increasing number of passengers travelling through the airport.

In 1978, major expansion of Stansted Airport was proposed by The Government White Paper ‘Airport Policy’.

Two years later, BAA submitted an application for planning to develop the airport, and following a lengthy public enquiry, the Government gave permission to develop the airport to handle approximately 15 million passengers a year.

An early motion by 75 MP’s led to a compromise of a phased development to 8 million passengers and then 15 million passengers, with a cap on the number of take offs and landings by passenger aircraft.

In April 1986, work started on the development of the new airport. In March 1991, the Queen officially opened the new terminal that cost £400 million to build with capacity increased from 2 million people per year to 8 million.

Permission was granted in June 1999 to move to phase 2 of the airport development, and in July of the same year, Parliament raised Passenger Air Transport Movement cap to 185,000 a year.

In the New Year of 2000, work on phase 2 commenced and a public consultation begins on expansion of the airport to approximately 25 million passengers per year.

Coming on leaps and bounds, in July 2002, London Stansted is included in the Government’s South East and East of England Regional Air Services study of the future of aviation in the south east over the next 30 years.

Planning permission was granted in September 2002 to expand the airport to 25 million passengers per year.

In January 2003, Stansted agrees to a £30 million package of community benefits and environmental safeguards.

London Stansted’s draft interim masterplan was released in 2005.
