Airport redevelopment at London Stansted is planned for the future, mainly with the addition of a new runway identified in the 2003 Government White Paper. |

Stansted will be the first airport in the South East to have a new runway for over 50 years. The new runway follows the Government’s White Paper, The Future of Air Transport, and the project has been called Stansted Generation 2, as it will take Stansted into a new era.
Planning is expected to be submitted to Uttlesford District Council for Stansted's second runway development in 2007 and, subject to planning permission, the second runway should be operational by 2013.
Stansted currently serves over 22 million passengers a year with flights to over 145 destinations in 32 countries and is the third busiest passenger airport in the UK. The Airport already has planning permission to serve 25 million passengers a year, a level that is expected to be reached by 2008.
Looking to the future, the single runway is expected to serve 35 million passengers a year by 2015 and planning application has been submitted in April 2006 to accommodate this growth.
Following the growth of the airport within its existing boundary, it is expected that Stansted will not be able to meet continued growing demand for air travel without building a second runway.
Air and noise pollution is therefore a concern for the local London Stansted community. The proposed airport expansions will come alongside improved operations and landscaping to minimise the effect, and environmental concerns will also be carefully considered.
The airport expansion however will also create more jobs, act as even more of a hub for regular flyers and also improve London’s tourist trade. |
