Duty Free at Stansted Airport - here you'll find a wealth of information for your duty free and tax free shopping, plus other duty free allowances on all manner of goods.

Duty Free Allowances ...

Duty free shopping at Stansted Airport is available to passenger flying outside of the EU. Those passengers are also able to take advantage of tax free shopping too, and those who are travelling within the EU or International long haul can also shop tax free. Stansted Information on duty free amounts can be found below.

Do take note on the duty free allowances, along with goods that are prohibited and restricted from being brought into the UK.

Duty Free Shopping & The EU ...

Shopping tax free means travellers will make a saving equal to the Value Added Tax not being added - that's 17.5% discount. The price ticket will show what the goods would normally retail at and what they retail at as tax free items.

Do note however that passengers are sometimes required to pay tax on purchases when arriving at their final destination that is outside of the EU. Or when returning to the UK, although goods such as those purchased in a newsagents, bookshop or pharmacy are excluded, as are duty paid goods.

Duty Free shopping means even further discounts are available for those travellers going outside of the EU:

* The whole of Cyprus is part of the EU, however, goods from any area in Cyprus not under effective control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, are treated as non-EU imports
** Not Including the Canary Islands
*** Not including The Channel Islands

If you are travelling to Gibraltar it is worth remembering that for customs purposes the country is considered outside of the Community Customs territory and that customs allowances for outside of the EU apply.

When making a purchase in the departure lounge shops you will be required to present your boarding card each and every time you are at the check out so do keep it easily to hand.

Make the most of your shopping time before your flight by visiting the World Duty Free website (www.worlddutyfree.com) so you don't miss any of the great bargains that are there to be had on fine fragrances, beauty products, alcohol and tobacco. And if some of the ranges don't look familiar don't get confused - many retailers use the Airports to launch their very latest designs and technology, right before it hits the high street.

For those travelling to Cardiff International Airport can also shop at the tax free World Shopping Arrivals store before they leave the security area. This shop stocks a good range of fragrances, cosmetics, electrical goods and duty paid alcohol and tobacco.

Stansted Airport Customs Allowances ...

Duty free allowances, and tax free shopping, depends on a traveller's final destination, therefore if you are travelling from the EU back into the UK the following can be brought without additional custom's duty:
  • 50g of perfume and 250ml of toilet water

  • 1 Litre of alcoholic beverages stronger than 22%, or 2 Litres of still table wine, or fortified or sparkling wine, or other liqueurs

  • 200 cigarettes, or 100 cigarillos, or 50 cigars, or 250g of tobacco

  • Other goods including souvenirs up to the value of £145

  • Goods obtained duty and tax paid in the EU are unlimited
As previously mentioned, Gibraltar and The Channel Islands are treated as being outside of the EU for the Duty Free section.

If bringing items into any EU Country where you have had tax paid you won't be required to pay additional tax or duty when returning to the UK.

Any alcohol or tobacco brought into the Country however, must be carried by the passenger, for the passenger's own use (i.e. personal consumption and/or gifts). Goods of any kind brought into the Country for resale or for payment will be considered as for a commercial use.

Should customs have reason to suspect that any such goods have been brought into the Country for commercial use, you are likely to be asked a series of questions by a Customs Officer. For example, what are the type and quantity of goods that have been bought? Why they were bought? How much was paid? How often the passenger travels? How much alcohol and tobacco the passenger normally consumes?

Also taken into account is whether the goods have been concealed or if they where highly visible.

For example, customs are likely to suspect if the following quantities are being imported:
  • 3,200 cigarettes
  • 200 cigars
  • 400 cigarillos
  • 3kg tobacco
  • 110 Litres of beer
  • 90 Litres of wine
  • 10 Litres of spirits
  • 20 Litres of fortified wine (i.e. port or sherry)
If it is decided that the goods have been brought into the country for commercial use the goods are likely to be seized and not returned.  Likewise, if you are caught selling alcohol or tobacco goods, they may be seized.  Both are considered a serious offence and the maximum sentence passed is up to seven years in prison.

Like the UK, most Countries have their own laws on how much tobacco and alcohol you may have in your possession when entering their Country. Some require you to carry documents covering the goods in your possession. If you are planning on buying larger amounts of alcohol or tobacco, check with the Country’s Authorities before you purchase the goods so you are not breaking any laws.

PLEASE NOTE: The following EU Countries have their own special rules for cigarettes and tobacco products:

  Special Restrictions
  Czech Republic 200 cigarettes, or
250g smoking tobacco, or
50 cigars, or
100 cigarillos
  Estonia 200 cigarettes, or
250g of smoking tobacco*
Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia & Slovenia 200 Cigarettes*
* From these Countries, there is no limit on other tobacco products as long as they are for the passengers own consumption.
